Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Curriculum

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education) at KEVI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy is a carefully planned, developmental program that equips students with essential knowledge, understanding, and skills. The goal is to empower students to manage their lives independently and safely, both in the present and the future. The PSHE curriculum is designed in alignment with government guidance, ensuring it provides an age-appropriate learning experience tailored to our pupils’ needs.

The core purpose of our study in PSHE at KEVI HWGA, and what we want students to gain from it, can be summarised in three statements:

  • To equip students with the skills, knowledge and attributes needed to successfully access a range of opportunities in an ever-changing world.
  • To give students an understanding of how to lead responsible, confident, safe, healthy, and independent lives.
  • To establish and develop their own values, attitudes, and virtues to enrich themselves and our community.

Curriculum Overview:

  • Dreams & Goals (Careers): Students explore career aspirations and learn about pathways to achieve their dreams.
  • Relationships: This topic area covers various aspects of relationships, including friendships, family dynamics, and communication.
  • Sex & Relationships Education: Students receive age-appropriate education on sexual health, consent, and healthy relationships.
  • Health Me (Health & Well-being): PSHE addresses physical and mental health, emphasising well-being and self-care.
  • Being Me in My World/ Living in the Wider World: Students learn about their roles in society, global issues, and their impact on the world.
  • Character Development, E-Safety, and Safeguarding: These themes are woven throughout the curriculum and are relevant across all key stages.

All students, from Year 7 to 13, have one 50-minute PSHE lesson scheduled each week. Our dedicated team of specialist PSHE staff ensures that students acquire essential skills and knowledge in these vital areas.

We run three Personal Development days across the academic year where students get the opportunity to build upon knowledge of the academy’s character education scheme whilst learning about current topics, relevant safeguarding and careers information.

Engagement of parents is vital for students personal development.

At HWGA we believe it is important to create and maintain an open dialogue between parents and teachers about PSHE/RSE.

As the DfE statutory guidance states: ‘Parents should be given every opportunity to understand the purpose and content of Relationships Education and RSE. Good communication and opportunities for parents to understand and ask questions about the school’s approach help increase confidence in the curriculum.’

HWGA offer parents:

  • PSHE/RSE policy consultation drop ins.
  • Parent evening drop ins or appointments – Ms Robin (appointments available on request).
  • Open evening drop ins – Ms Robin (potential year 6 students).
  • Publishing of the PSHE/RSE documentation education curriculum on the school website.
  • Opportunities to email mmorgan@hwga.org.uk or msahonta@hwga.org.uk with any questions or comments.
