The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a voluntary programme of activities that can be undertaken by anyone aged from 14 to 25. At Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy students in Year 9 can work towards achieving their Bronze DofE Award.
This award provides students with skills and experience that are consistently recognised by employers and educational institutions worldwide. Participating in this award helps develop students’ independence, confidence and leadership skills. Students will have the opportunity to make a difference to other people’s lives and their community as well as making lifelong memories
We passionately believe that a pupil’s personal development is as important as the academic success they strive to achieve. Through the Duke of Edinburgh Award, our pupils will have the opportunity to develop valuable character skills through volunteering, becoming more physically active and skilful areas of their personal interest.
The Duke of Edinburgh expedition takes place in June or July where they demonstrate their navigation skills across the countryside in Cannock Chase, Staffordshire. They pitch tents, sleep overnight at Beaudesert Campsite and experience cooking in the great outdoors. This experience will truly test the character and determination of all pupils who sign up to the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
