Values, Attitudes and Attributes (VAAs)
We believe in being: Hard working, Empathetic and Agile
It is imperative that our students are able to learn effectively in every lesson and promotion of our values, attitudes and attributes allow that to happen, through the behaviour policy. In addition to our behaviour for learning, we need to demonstrate these positive values, attitudes and attributes around the academy as well, at all times.
We have devised simple flowcharts to outline how we support effective learning in our lessons and positive conduct around the academy.
Independent learning plays a vital part in children’s education and is set by teachers according to clear Academy and Departmental policies.
Home Study is set for all year groups 7-11 and after each session in the 6th Form. You are expected to write your home study within your planners and check your subject TEAMs sites. Home study can be a variety of activities from research, reading, extended writing, examination questions, Seneca activities and TEAMs tasks.
Home Study Support
Clubs, Societies and Committees
As humans, we learn and grow from new experiences. At King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy, we ensure that all of our pupils have access to the widest range of learning opportunities through our extensive enrichment programme. This provision provides all pupils with the opportunity to learn, develop and master a range of skills that will help to create lifelong interests, whilst building positive relationships, confidence, self-esteem and resilience. We recommend that all students at King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy participate in at least two enrichment activities each week.
Student led clubs and opportunities to lead
Students are encouraged to lead clubs they are enthusiastic about to ensure our Enrichment program is as broad and inclusive as possible.
We currently have several student led clubs. Not only does this allow our students to develop their organisation and leadership skills, it also allows them to share their passions with their peers. Students are encouraged to take complete ownership of their clubs whilst still being supported by staff. if you are interested in leading a club, please see Ms Blanchette.
How Does Enrichment Support Students with their Character and Personal Development
Khadija Jaiteh
” I go to Crafts in RE because we do a lot of crafts which I think helps with my creativity. We get to learn about things I didn’t know about such as pancake day, we even got to make pancakes which was pretty fun. It has helped me to grow my friendship circle too”
Momina Khayat
“I love leading Korean Club as I get to share East Asian culture with other people which is something I am passionate about. As I lead the club, it’s helped me with my confidence and speaking in front of groups of people. I am also supported by staff and have a TEAMS page to help me navigate the club.”
Janae Vito
“I attend drama and debate club. They have both helped to improve my self-esteem and confidence. They have also had a positive impact on my academic learning, especially structuring arguments in English and History”
Zoe Chang
‘I attend Historical Figures club and enjoy learning about different figures outside of the lesson environment. The session is calm and relaxed. It is interesting learning about how these often forgotten people (such as women and people of colour) have shaped the society at present”
The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE)
The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) is a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn life skills. This nationally recognised award combines fun adventure, social action, setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries.
There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold. They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition and, for Gold only, working with a team on a residential activity. Through a DofE programme young people have fun, make friends, improve their self-esteem, build confidence and raise aspirations. Students will gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication and drive. Endorsed by over 100 UK employers, and recognised internationally, the award gives pupils the edge when applying for college, university and employment in the future.
Enrichment Loyalty Scheme/Rewards
The Enrichment Loyalty Scheme is a great way of being rewarded for participating in the clubs on offer at Handsworth Wood Girls’ Girls Academy. Simply collect an Enrichment Booklet from Ms Blanchette in W207 and take it with you to every club session you attend to get stamped by the teacher.
There are three levels needed to complete to qualify for a prize;
- Build
- Grow
- Accelerate
Each stage results in a prize, the more clubs you attend the more prizes you qualify for. At the end of the academic year, the student who has attended the most clubs will win an extra special prize!
