PSHE and RSE
Engagement of parents is vital for students personal development.
At HWGA we believe it is important to create and maintain an open dialogue between parents and teachers about PSHE/RSE.
As the DfE statutory guidance states: ‘Parents should be given every opportunity to understand the purpose and content of Relationships Education and RSE. Good communication and opportunities for parents to understand and ask questions about the school’s approach help increase confidence in the curriculum.’
HWGA offer parents:
- PSHE/RSE policy consultation drop ins.
- Parent evening drop ins or appointments – Ms Robin (appointments available on request).
- Open evening drop ins – Ms Robin (potential year 6 students).
- Publishing of the PSHE/RSE documentation education curriculum on the school website.
- Opportunities to email mmorgan@hwga.org.uk or msahonta@hwga.org.uk with any questions or comments.

Admission applications for September 2025 are now being accepted by Birmingham School Admissions.

The proposed arrangements can be viewed here (King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy Proposed Admissions Arrangements 2026-2027). Admissions Criteria
Where the number of applications for admission exceeds the number of
places available at the school, places are offered as follows:
- Looked After Children / Previously Looked After Children
- Siblings (a sister who will be in attendance in September of the year of admission)
- Distance (Children who live nearest the school)
Within each of these categories, priority is given to those who live nearest the school, calculated on the basis of a straight-line measurement between the child’s home address and the school.
Notes: Any child with an Educational Health & Care Plan or a statement of special educational needs (SEN) is required to be admitted to the school that is named in their statement. This gives any such child overall priority for admission to the named school. This is not an over subscription criterion.
In-Year 7-11 Applications
Applications made outside the normal admissions round (in-year admissions) will be made directly to the school. Birmingham City Council will provide an ‘In Year’ application form for parents to complete.

We also require proof of your current address dated within the last 3 months, a copy of your daughter passport and your daughter’s birth certificate. Please send all completed forms to enquiry@hwga.org.uk
King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy abides by the procedures regarding pupils who are granted places at the school following an appeal. Such pupils are welcomed into the school community.
Further guidance on Admissions and Appeals can be found in ‘Secondary Education Opportunities for your child in Birmingham’.
Admissions 2025/2026
Families with children due to start secondary school in September 2025 (i.e. those children born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014) are now able to apply online for secondary school places.
The deadline for applications is 31 October 2024 and places will be offered on 3 March 2025.
It is particularly important that families carefully consider schools’ admission criteria and name at least one school on their application where their child would have been offered a place in previous years.
Admissions into Sixth Form
A limited number of external admissions is anticipated each year into Year 12. For entry into Year 12 in September 2025 this number is expected to be 25. External candidates wishing to apply for a place in the Sixth Form should contact the school. It is not necessary for parents of existing pupils to apply formally for places in Year 12. Places will be provided to internal students who meet the entry requirements.
